TMS Therapy for Depression in Lynn
TMS Therapy for Depression
TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) therapy for depression is a
treatment option for patients who have severe depression. The treatment
is based on the brain simulation concept. It involves stimulating a
specific part of the brain to help a patient manage their depression
symptoms.
Depression is commonly treated using antidepressants or
psychotherapy. Sometimes these treatments fail and the patient still
suffers from the condition. These patients can become hopeless and
become further depressed. TMS therapy is for them because it works where
other treatments fail.
What TMS Therapy is, and what it entails
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a brain stimulation technique
that uses an electromagnetic coil to release magnetic pulses into the
brain. Magnetic pulses are released repeatedly to stimulate nerve cells
in the brain while targeting the part that controls the patient’s mood
and depression symptoms.
During a TMS therapy session, the magnetic coil is placed against the
scalp. The patient can hear some clicking sounds and can feel a tapping
sensation on the forehead. There is no pain during therapy therefore no
anesthesia is administered.
One session takes anywhere between 30 to 40 minutes. Full treatment
requires approximately 30 sessions. The sessions are scheduled daily to
avoid the reoccurrence of a depressive episode.
After treatment, patients can continue their normal activity as the
treatment does not leave undesirable side effects.
When compared to other treatments for depression, TMS therapy has a
high success rate. Out of three patients, two are cured.
